For those of you who know me, I consider birthdays to be one of the most special days of the year. No matter what the milestone — 7, 17, 27, 77 — they are ALL worth celebrating in a seriously big way.
When you think about it, it’s the one day of the year people get to celebrate YOU and how you’ve (hopefully) improved their lives by being around. And given how fast life goes by, it’s behooves us all to take great strides to celebrate each and every day.
But there in lies a problem. When you have 5 friends, holding grandiose, meaningful birthdays 5 times a year is cake. (ha). But now with Facebook, we have dozens of “close” friends, and it quickly becomes impossible to celebrate someone’s birthday with any real meaning.
Well, I’m not out to solve that problem with this post. Rather, I’m out to change the whole “direction” of birthday giving. But I can’t do it alone.
Enter: The Backwards Birthday Guild, or BBG.
Join us, and we can guarantee that you will get more presents than ever before!
“But how are you going to do that?” – said curious blog reader #283. Simple! Here’s how it goes.
Your precious birthday…the day you wait all year for… the day you get cake and presents and love from everyone stops being about you. Instead, it becomes a day of giving.
For every BBG member, they use their birthday to celebrate the friends and family in their lives (BBG members of course). If there are 10 members in your guild, then you must buy exactly 9 gifts and send them out to make sure they arrive on YOUR birthday (assuming you’re the 10th member).
It may seem like a lot, but it’s technically exactly what you would have spent when celebrating the “old” Birthday way. Only with BBG, you take 1 trip to the mall, not 10. And you get all of your birthday shopping done once, rather than spreading it out throughout the year.
But the best part about becoming a member of the BBG: As a member, you get presents CONSTANTLY throughout the year. For 10 members, you’re guaranteed to get a present sent to you 9 times over the course of a year. Talk about the gift that keeps on giving!
Sure, this idea doesn’t scale to 100s of guild members. But I already said that I’m not out to solve that problem.
But in all seriousness, the best part about the BBG (besides the name) is that it removes the self-centered nature of Birthdays and instead turns it into a celebration of your friends and family. After all, you wouldn’t be where you are today without them. And what better day to celebrate that fact than on yours.
